Fresh from a week by the seaside with not even time to stop for an ice cream, with the days getting shorter, topped off with a week of Tories on our TV screens, it's almost enough to make you want to stay in bed - but never fear, as always LWN has something to warm your cockles.
From winning awards in Brighton, to hitting the headlines, there's a lot to catch up on from the last month of work. And that's before we even mention our second National Political Day. Foundations for Victory - National Political ConferenceAfter last year's sold out, award winning (more later in the email) Political Day, we’re delighted to announce LWN’s second National Political Conference, Foundations for Victory, which will take place on Saturday November 16th at the TUC in London. The event will feature high profile speakers from the labour movement and beyond, with discussions on everything from the trade union movement to revolution in the Middle East. Last year's event was a highlight in our calendar and a sell-out, and this year we’re making it even better. We’ll be adding more speakers and panels over the next few weeks, so keep an eye on the website and the #LWN13 hashtag on twitter for more information. Speakers include: Ros Wynne-Jones the Mirror, Jacqui Smith former Home Secretary, Margaret McDonagh former Labour Party General Secretary, Kat Segal Labour Party Digital Director, Mary Riddell the Telegraph, Luciana Berger MP Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Bonnie Greer playwright, Alison McGovern MP Labour Whip, Amy Lame broadcaster, Rowenna Davis New Statesman and PPC for Southampton, Carys Afoko New Economics Foundation, Cath Speight GMB and Labour’s NEC, Sophy Gardner former RAF Wing Commander and PPC for Gloucester,Ruth Smeeth HOPE not Hate, Purna Sen PPC for Brighton Pavilion, Helen Pearce Unions Together, Josie Channer PPC for Kingswood, Cllr Caroline Badley Campaign Coordinator Birmingham Edgbaston, Kezia Dugdale MSP Chair, Movement for Change, Clare Moody Unite and European Candidate for the South West. Picture Perfect Conference attendees who are also Labour Women’s Network members and supporters can book a session for professional head-shots by acclaimed portrait photographer James Perrin for just £60, including a £10 donation to LWN. This is a great opportunity for aspiring candidates to get a campaign essential at a great price, all whilst supporting our Network. Oh We Did Like To Be Beside The SeasideIt was a phenomenally busy week for LWN at Party Conference, with our AGM kicking the whole weekend off. If you missed conference, here’s our round up of LWN’s week by the sea side (encounters with menacing seagulls not withstanding). Election Results We kicked off our AGM on Saturday morning with the results of our biggest ever election. Congratulations to Kirsty McNeill, Jacqui Smith, Emma Burnell, Josie Channer and Ann Leedham who were elected and commiserations to all the other excellent candidates. The Award-Winning LWN At conference we launched our panel pledge, asking male comrades to pledge they wouldn't appear on an all male panel. We're pleased to report that most were more than happy to do so, with everyone from local Councillors, to Young Labour Committee Members to Trade Union General Secretaries pledging to do their bit for women's representation in politics. You can see just some of the men that signed up here. Aspiring Candidates' TrainingOne of the highlights of Labour Party conference was seeing Purna Sen, LWN graduate and Brighton Pavilion PPC, opening Conference. If you’d like to come on our course and find out how we can help you to be ready for selection (or for any other goal in the Party) there are still places available on our Leeds course this year, and we’re delighted to have opened applications for our first courses of 2014. If you’re not sure, take a look at what LWN Graduate (and one of Labour's newest MPs) Emma Lewell-Buck says about the impact our training had on her.
