Councillor Sharon Thompson, Labour Women's Network Committee

Sharon was first elected to the LWN Executive Committee in 2020 and loves the organisation so much she is one of the training team.  

Sharon is the Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council, she is the first Black or Asian person to hold the position in the City, Deputy Mayor of the West Midlands Combined Authority and Birmingham City Council Cabinet member for Economy and Skills.

Prior to this appointment Sharon was a Cabinet Member for five years, and held the housing portfolio – the largest and most challenging in Local Government. Sharon is the Vice Chair of the ALC (Association of Labour Councillors) and mentors other councillors on behalf of the LGA (Local Government Association).

Sharon has been a councillor since 2014, but previously worked for Birmingham City Council as an Council Officer. Throughout her career she has worked in the Third, Public and Housing Sectors. In addition she served as a Magistrate.

Sharon has become a strong advocate for the housing sector and has influenced national campaigns for legislative change and resources for Local Government. She has given evidence at the DLUHC Select Committee, APPG Homelessness and the London Assemblies. In addition, Sharon has sat on several housing commissions, including The Kerslake Commission on Homelessness and Rough sleeping which was chaired by the late Sir Bob Kerslake.
