LWN Elections 2020

Election BannerCalling all potential candidates…. Do you have what it takes to join LWN's Management Committee?

Every year, eligible Labour Women's Network members elect Management Committee members who are responsible for all the work we do during the year. We are proud that our elections are independently officiated and always conducted positively in a in a spirit of sisterhood.

While 2019 and 2020 have had many challenges, we are proud of all we have achieved, and that we are coming through them stronger.

The next few years are going to be busy ones. We need to ensure LWN remains relevant and impactful; that our training offer remains right for the shifting political landscape; that we work with Keir, Angela and across the Party to progress women’s power and agency within Labour; and we need to grow our membership and raise funds to achieve all this. This requires a hardworking, enthusiastic, skilled and diverse committee.

This year we will be holding elections for:

  • Treasurer (1), and¬†
  • Four (4) Committee Members¬†

All full members of Labour Women's Network are entitled to stand, providing you have been a you have been a member of LWN for four months prior to the date nominations open (22nd July 2020).

We actively encourage women from all communities and backgrounds to put themselves forward, and particularly welcome self-nominations from Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic women, women with disabilities, LGBT+ women, working class women, and women from all regions across the UK. Committee members are expected to commit to and strive towards making LWN as inclusive an organisation as possible.

LWN takes positive action to guarantee that each year at least one of the four members elected to the Management Committee is a BAME woman. The self-defining Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic woman who receives the highest number of votes, will automatically be elected, so please make sure you tick the relevant part of the nomination form if this applies to you.  You can find out more about this in the FAQs below.

All LWN committee positions are for a two year term.  You can find out more about this in the FAQs below.

Nominations open on Wednesday, 22nd July 2020 and will close at noon on Wednesday 19th August 2020.

What does an LWN committee member do?
Non-portfolio committee members work alongside LWN Officers (Chair, Secretary, Treasurer) to provide strategic oversight over LWN's vision and activities, as well as practical help in ensuring we meet our goals and fulfil responsibilities to a high standard. Committee members may take on individual responsibility for particular aspects of LWN's work as agreed at Committee Meetings. We aim to use the particular skills and experiences of Committee Members to best capture the value you bring to the organisation. This could be anything from leading on high value fundraising, to joining our training team, to influencing our campaign direction, to supporting our role as an employer, to helping us magnify our reach.

LWN aims to hold at least four Management Committee meetings a year. These will be a mixture of face to face meetings and virtual meetings held on a digital platform such as Zoom. Additionally, every October we hold a Strategy Weekend to refresh our vision and action plan for the year ahead. Ad hoc meetings are held as and when needed. Management Committee members are also expected to attend and support LWN events, from conferences to fundraising dinners. Reasonable expenses are paid for members who need to travel to attend any of our meetings or events. Our main meetings schedule for the year ahead is usually determined at or shortly after the October Strategy Weekend, to allow Committee Members maximum opportunity to attend throughout the year.

Posts Being Elected

Treasurer (1)
The Treasurer is responsible for oversight over LWN's finances. This includes taking a lead role in producing accounts, budgeting and financial reports; holding administrative responsibility for LWN bank accounts; and making sure that LWN complies with its legal responsibilities, including reporting any relevant donations to the Electoral Commission. The Treasurer also leads on fundraising in conjunction with staff, Officers and Committee.

Committee Members (4)
Members of the LWN committee are expected to take an active role in LWN's work; this includes supporting events through organisation and attendance, participating in committee meetings, and representing LWN at other labour movement events, as a minimum.

If you wish to nominate yourself for either position, please click here.

We want to make our elections as engaging and accessible as possible for our members, so as well as a personal statement, candidates are now able to submit a short campaigning video (maximum of 2 minutes long) and a photograph with their nomination. These will be made available to LWN members with their ballots, placed on our website once polls are open, sent via a link with voting instructions to eligible members, and shared on social media.

Once we have verified your membership, you will receive an email confirming your attendance. Security codes and joining instructions will be issued in advance of the meeting.

Please be aware the deadline to register to attend our AGM is Saturday 12th September.

If you wish to know more about the process, below are our Frequently Asked Questions. Please email [email protected] if you have a query not answered below.

I have just nominated myself, what happens now?
Firstly, thank you. Once your nomination has been submitted and after the close of nominations, we will verify that you are eligible to stand. The only reasons you will not be able to stand in our elections are:
a) you are not a full member of LWN,
b) that you have not had four months membership prior to the nominations opening, and/or
c) you fail to validate your nomination on the nomination website.

When you start your nomination form, UK-Engage will ask you to submit an email and password, so you can stop and start your application until the close of nominations. Once you have registered, you will receive an email from them to activate your account.

Please be aware that by pressing 'Save' at the end of the nomination form it will automatically be marked complete and submitted. You can amend your application up to close of nominations, however it is extremely important that if you decide not to continue with your application you must edit the application to remove information.

If you are not eligible to stand in our election, we will contact you to inform you as soon as possible. For all eligible nominations, we will contact you once nominations close.

Who conducts LWN's election process?
This year, LWN are working with UK-Engage. UK-Engage have a track record of running efficient, engaging elections for organisations of all shapes and sizes.

UK-Engage will send out emails or letters to eligible members with voting instructions and a link to candidate campaign material, as well as the actual ballot.

If we haven’t got an email address for you or you have unsubscribed from our emails, you should receive this via post, but it would be very helpful (and cost efficient for LWN) if you could update your preferences so we can email you in the future, as you will not be receiving our e-news or important information either.  Please let us know your current email here or re-subscribe to our e-news here.

If you haven’t received your ballot by 6th September, please get in touch via email, and we will investigate and reissue if necessary. Please check your junk mail first; the email will come from UK-Engage.

I’ve heard you have take positive action to guarantee a BAME woman a place on the Management Committee, how does this work?
Yes, we take positive action to ensure at least one Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic woman is elected to our non-portfolio Management Committee positions each year. On the nomination form, candidates will be asked if they self-define at BAME. Please tick if this applies to you as it cannot be done retrospectively. Complete the nomination form as per the instructions. The self-defining BAME woman who receives the highest number of votes will automatically be elected to the Committee. The election results will be announced at our AGM.

Will I be able to see who else is up for election?
Yes, but only once voting as started.

When and how will I find out the results of the election?
We will email all candidates on the morning of our AGM with the election results, which will be embargoed until the formal announcement at our AGM. Candidates are encouraged to attend the AGM if possible. Our AGM will this year be held via a digital platform. You can find our more below.

What is, and happens at the AGM?
An Annual General Meeting (AGM) is a constitutional yearly gathering of LWN members. This year our AGM will take place online on Saturday 19th September (time to be confirmed as soon as possible). Our AGM allows members to hear reports from the Committee on the achievements and work of LWN over the year. Members can also ask questions of the Committee and make suggestions for next year. At our AGM we also announce the results of our Management Committee Elections, and if required make any changes to the constitution. We ask that all candidates do their best to attend our AGM. LWN members will need to pre-register to attend, no later than a week before the event. Once we have verified your membership, you will receive an email confirming your attendance and a day before the AGM you will receive a further email with any security codes and instructions.
Please be aware the deadline to register to attend our AGM is Saturday, 12th September 2020.

We hope this gives you all the information you need, but please get it touch here if you have any further questions.

Kiran Mahil, LWN Secretary is Acting Returning Officer 2020.
